Day of the Dead in Oaxaca
Among all the regions of Mexico, Oaxaca's rich culture and gastronomy have made known its Day of the Dead memorial celebration as one of the most ornamentally and culturally rich. Pre-Columbian and Catholic traditions come together in a blend of festive and spiritual manifestations to remember and celebrate the faithful departed. This exhibition is part of the Day of the Dead festivities under the auspice of the Atlanta History Center, curated by the General Consulate of Mexico, and part of Samson’s “Navel of the Moon” series—an ongoing exploration of the cultural vastness of this nation through the lens of one of its expatriate sons currently living in Atlanta. “The navel of the moon” stands for one of the most commonly accepted translations for the Aztec word Mexico. Like the country, the etymology delves into rich philosophical and cultural intricacy. The title of the work eludes to a nation that has been both historically complex and taken for granted, at least by the author. The series aims to portray the beauty, diversity and values of the Mexican people that he often finds missing in the mainstream iconography representing his motherland abroad.
